  • Spring Term, Week 1

    April 6th, 2023

It’s been a bit of a rough week to start spring term. I’ve been sick with the stomach bug. Had one really bad night of symptoms and since then, I’ve had a headache every day this week along with mild nausea which makes almost everything I love like coffee distasteful. It actually reminds me alot of when I was pregnant. I was never super sick, but for the first trimester, I always felt slightly nauseated and food, especially food I used to love, including coffee never tasted good even though I mentally wanted it to so bad.

So, this is my junior year, spring term. I am taking Social Justice Practice and Social Work Practice 1 for my social work classes and Southwestern Borderlands for my final Equity and Inclusion elective requirement.

I have to admit that I am so burned out of school right now. I’m kinda burned on on life right now. From Aaron’s practice going up in flames (with Praxis) to winter just continuing on and on and on in Bend, I am finding ZERO motivation. I feel like I have a mountain of things to do and very little time to accomplish it.

This week, a highlight in my Borderlands class is the idea that the Southwestern Borderlands is more than just the physical, geographical location of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, but it is , as written in her book “Borderlands/La Frontera) “Physically present wherever two or more cultures edge each other, where people of different races occupy the same territory.” (Anzaldua, 1987). It is a place where American History books rarely begin their story. I am interested in this course because I think undocumented people from Mexico are treated as if they are “the other”. I think history tells us a different story and that once “we” were the other, but it has always been ok for White Anglo Americans to take when the land was not ours.

In my social justice practice class, we did a video of “the day in my life”.

In social work practice, the salient material for me was listening to the podcast “Doing the work” by Shimon Cohen where he interviewed Kelechi Wright and Kortney Carr on their article.

It is now Thursday and I am pretty much done for the week! So glad to have this week done and I hope I start enjoying food again 🙂

  • Spring Term, Day 1

    April 3rd, 2023

It is day 1 of Spring Term. I started this day still trying to recover from a terrible stomach flu. Still feeling weak, barely able to keep anything down and overall feeling blah. BUT, I am excited about this course and excited to get started in another term of learning how to be an effective social worker.

Looking so tired 😪 and sick
